days until Oyasama 130th Anniversary!
Miki Nakayama, the Foundress of Tenrikyo, withdrew from physical life on the lunar calender date of January 26, 1887. After observing Her First, Fifth, and Tenth anniversaries, Tenrikyo has conducted the subsequent anniversaries every decade.
In Tenrikyo, a person’s death is referred to as “passing away for rebirth.” It is customary for Tenrikyo followers to conduct memorial services in years that mark important junctures (such as the first, fifth, tenth, and every decade thereafter). Oyasama’s anniversaries are, however, fundamentally different from such memorial services.
Out of Her single-hearted parental love that is intent on the salvation of all human beings throughout the world, She went through hardships and adversities in high spirits, thereby demonstrating a path that can save all people in the world. In order to hasten salvation and urge the spiritual growth of human beings, Oyasama shortened Her term of life by twenty-five years and withdrew from physical life in 1887. Yet, by virtue of Her eternal life, She continues to work for world salvation now, as ever before.
Tenrikyo has observed the anniversaries of Oyasama whereby the followers have set themselves a goal to achieve as they worked to respond to the parental love of Oyasama. The followers of the path have striven to attain a new level of spiritual growth in anticipation of each important juncture represented by Oyasama’s anniversary in the hope of bringing joy to Her.
In the three-year lead-up to the 130th Anniversary of Oyasama, all of us in the Tenrikyo community are making a committed, focused, and concerted effort to carry out salvation work, starting with whatever we can. We are in the final year in which we are giving finishing touches to the effort we have been making. Those who have been saved are now returning to Jiba and attending the Besseki lectures so that they can grow into Yoboku who strive to help save others.
The 130th Anniversary of Oyasama is the day when all of us followers are to show the everliving Oyasama how much we have grown spiritually. It is also the day when we will take a fresh, new step forward in realizing the world of the Joyous Life.
