The 14th Assembly of Prayer for Peace took place in Okinawa on August 15, the day marking the end of World War II. This annual assembly is organized by a group of religious leaders based in Okinawa including Rev. Kunizo Yamaguchi, superintendent of Tenrikyo Okinawa Diocese; Rev. Hirotaka Sueyasu, head of the Association of Shinto Shrines in Okinawa; Rev. Shunkai Nako, chairperson of Okinawa Buddhist Federation; and Rev. Toshio Oshikawa, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Naha. Held under the sponsorship of eight media companies such as JORY-TV-Ryukyu Asahi, Radio Okinawa, and Ryukyu Shinpo, the assembly pays tribute to the victims of the battle of Okinawa as well as sends out the message of everlasting peace. This year 435 people attended. Each religious group took a share in organizing the assembly events. Since Tenrikyo was in charge of the closing ceremony this year, Rev. Yamaguchi delivered a closing address. In it, he mentioned how the world was still plagued by war and terrorism and emphasized that human beings, who share one planet, are meant not to hurt but to help one another like brothers and sisters. He closed his address by calling on all people around the world to recognize that each nation, and each race for that matter, is a unit designed to facilitate the practice of mutual help. |
