Wife of Church Head Minister Featured on TV Show

Mrs. Ludmilla Mary Okuyama of Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, was featured on the documentary series "Mothers of the World Living in Japan" on NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) television. Mrs. Okuyama is the wife of the head minister of Tenseido Branch Church.

Mrs. Okuyama was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was introduced to the faith while she was in college, and thereafter began going to a mission station in Rio de Janeiro City. In 1986, she completed the Spiritual Development Course held at Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters in Brazil. She came to Japan in 1991 and entered the Oyasato Fusekomi Department at Tenrikyo Language Institute. She met her husband, Den'ichiro, while she was doing hinokishin at what was then called the Overseas Mission Department. They married and have since been sprinkling the fragrance of the teachings and engaging in salvation work together as a couple.

Mrs. Okuyama has been active in a local Japanese drumming group for the last five years. The program showed her instructing children at one of the group practices. Her constant cheerfulness at the practices has made her the mentor of young mothers and an active organizer in the local community. She says, "I would like my children to have multiple interests so that they may grow up to be people who become useful members of society."

In the closing scene of the documentary segment of the show, her four children gave a drawing of Mrs. Okuyama and thanked her, saying, "Mamãe obrigado" (Thank you, Mother). The scene led the guest commentator to say, "Just watching the family come together was so wonderful."
