    Beginning on May 29, the Tohoku and Hokkaido bloc of Tenrikyo Disaster Relief Hinokishin Corps (TDRHC) assisted in the recovery effort in Miyagi Prefecture in place of its regular training camp.

    On May 6, the last day of the Golden Week holiday, tornadoes struck three areas in Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures.

    The tornado that struck Tsukuba City, Ibaraki, caused disruptions in traffic and electric power and water supplies, in addition to killing one person, injuring 40, and damaging over 1,300 buildings.

    In response to a request from the Osuna District of Tsukuba City, the Ibaraki Diocese Disaster Relief Hinokishin Corps (DRHC) immediately contacted DRHC Headquarters in Tenri. DRHC Headquarters Leader Yuichi Tanaka went to the scene, set up camp, and made the decision to dispatch a unit comprised of members from nearby dioceses.

    On May 14, the unit comprised of members of Ibaraki, Kanagawa, and Tochigi diocese corps was dispatched to the scene. A total of 191 members assisted in the recovery work underway in rice fields and orchards over three days.

    On April 29, Tenrikyo Hinokishin Day was observed in many regions overseas. By the end of May, Hinokishin Day is scheduled to be held at 128 locations in 31 countries.

    On April 29, the 80th Tenrikyo Hinokishin Day was held around the globe under the slogan, “Gratitude, moderation, mutual help—Let’s express the teachings with our attitude.”

    On April 19, the day after the Oyasama Birth Celebration Service, the 94th Women’s Association Convention was held in the Inner Courtyard of Tenrikyo Church Headquarters. About 45,000 Women’s Association members attended the event.

    In commemoration of the 214th birthday of the everliving Oyasama, the Oyasama Birth Celebration Service was conducted on April 18 in the Main Sanctuary and Foundress’ Sanctuary of Tenrikyo Church Headquarters with the Shinbashira presiding. Over 70,000 pilgrims from across Japan and overseas returned for the event.

    The first entrance ceremony of Tenri Health Care University (President Osamu Yoshida) was held on April 3 in the university’s auditorium and honored by the presence of the Shinbashira.

    Tenri Health Care University is a result of integrating and reorganizing Tenri Nursing School and Tenri School of Medical Technology into one university. The first class of the new university consists of 74 students in the Department of Nursing Science and 31 students in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, for a total of 105 students.

    From March 14 through 16, Tenri University Gagaku Music Society conducted four performances in the three northeast prefectures of Fukushima, Iwate, and Miyagi. Gagaku Music Society members dedicated their music to the memory of victims as well as to provide strength and encouragement to survivors in regions still affected by last year’s disaster.

    On March 11, Tenrikyo Colombia Center (Cali) celebrated its 40th anniversary with the Shinbashira in attendance. Approximately 420 Yoboku and other followers attended the service.

    During his stay, the Shinbashira also visited churches and fellowships in Peru and Colombia.
