    On October 24, Daisuke Nakayama was named the successor-designate to the Shinbashira unanimously at a meeting of Honbu-in (Church Headquarters executive staff members). On the 26th, after the Autumn Grand Service, Director-in-Chief of Religious Affairs Hiroaki Yamazawa made an announcement regarding the decision to the officials of Church Headquarters, head ministers of directly supervised churches, diocese superintendents, and members of the Assembly at the Church Headquarters Assembly Hall. This past April, he was adopted by the Shinbashira and Mrs. Nakayama. Being the successor-designate, on the 26th he participated in the Kagura Service for the first time by playing the gong.

    Director-in-Chief of Religious Affairs Hiroaki Yamazawa commented:

    “It is a great pleasure for us, who follow this path with the Shinbashira as the core, to have Mr. Daisuke Nakayama settled as the successor-designate to the Shinbashira. In the season leading up to the 130th Anniversary of Oyasama, we would like to let this joy help us become ever more spirited and to conduct pre-anniversary activities in unity of mind.”

    Daisuke Nakayama’s Profile

    Daisuke Nakayama was born on January 23, 1991, as the first son of Honbu-in Zensuke Nakata and his wife Michiko. He received the truth of the Sazuke on January 11, 2009, and graduated from Tenri High School in February of the same year. He graduated from Kansai University as a policy studies major in March 2013 and, on the 4th of the following month, he was adopted by the Shinbashira and Mrs. Nakayama as their son in a ceremony conducted in the Foundress’ Sanctuary.

    Followers from all over gather for the Autumn Grand Service

    The Autumn Grand Service was conducted on October 26, 2013, with the Shinbashira Zenji Nakayama serving as the chief officiant. Despite the remnants of Typhoon Francisco leaving sprinkles until the start of the Service, many Yoboku and followers returned to the Home of the Parent in commemoration of the founding of the Teachings to attend this autumn’s Grand Service.

    After the reading of the Service prayer, the Kagura Service and the Dance with Hand Movements were performed joyously, as the worshipers who filled the worship halls and the church precincts harmoniously sang the Songs for the Service with their minds in unison. The Shinbashira’s sermon that followed passionately and repeatedly instructed all Yoboku and followers how they should be progressing towards Oyasama’s 130th Anniversary, which will be observed in two years and three months.

    On June 26th at the Inner Courtyard of Church Headquarters, a dedicatory ring entrance by the 70th Sumo Grand Champion Harumafuji took place after the June Monthly Service sermon. Many returning followers filled the courtyard to get a glimpse of champion’s majestic figure, despite the rain. With a smile on his face, the champion Harumafuji said to everyone, “I will continue to do my best to bring joy to everyone through my sumo wrestling.”

    Leaders of various religious denominations from all over the world gathered together to offer prayers for peace at “The Interreligious Gathering of Prayer for World Peace” (sponsored jointly by the Community of Sant’Egidio and the Roman Diocese). It was held from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 in Rome, Italy. Seven Tenrikyo representatives, including Honbu jun’in Yoshihiko Shirokihara,  and the head of Tenrikyo Europe Centre, Yoshihisa Hasegawa, attended the event. Using “Aspiration of Hope” as the main theme for the gathering, Mr.  Shirokihara took the stage on the morning of the 30th as a panelist for the “Hope and Peace – the Various Religions of Japan” subcommittee. In his speech, he touched upon the “vision of peace” that is the basis of the Teachings.

    The noon seated service, which is designed to encourage as many people as possible to return to and sow seeds of sincerity at Jiba, was first held in the Main Sanctuary on June 2. Many people, including groups of followers and families from around the country, attended the service and also took this opportunity to engage in hinokishin around the Sanctuary precincts. They strengthened their resolve to promote the activities leading up to the 130th Anniversary of Oyasama.

    The noon service is performed at the Main Sanctuary on Sundays, public holidays, and the 25th of each month between June 2013 and December 2015, except on days of Church Headquarters’ events—such as the Children’s Pilgrimage to Jiba, Tenrikyo Hinokishin Day, and so forth.

    The “Children’s Pilgrimage to Jiba,” held over a 10-day span at Tenrikyo Church Headquarters, came to a conclusion on August 4th.

    In all, there were over 30 events and activities, both indoors and outdoors, in the area surrounding Church Headquarters in Tenri, Nara, Japan. Through these events and activities, the children learned about the “three promises” for the Children’s Pilgrimage to Jiba: “Savor the joy of living,” “Take good care of things,” and “Help one another.”

    The Home of the Parent was filled with many happy smiles of children who had returned from various parts of Japan and the rest of the world.

    On April 29th, Tenrikyo Hinokishin Day was observed overseas and all over Japan. This Hinokishin Day was the first-ever Tenrikyo-wide event, helping to make progress during this ‘three years, one thousand days’ period leading up to Oyasama’s 130th Anniversary.

    This year’s theme was: “Now is a season for salvation: Let’s do Hinokishin!” We saw the lively figures of our fellow church members working diligently during this season of spiritedness in our respective communities.

    The Annual 95th Women’s Association Convention was held on April 19th at the Inner Courtyard of Church Headquarters. About 42,000 members gathered that day. Leading the greetings for the convention was the president of the Women’s Association, Mrs. Harue Nakayama. She talked about how Women’s Association members can take steps toward the 130th Anniversary of Oyasama. Next on the podium was the Shinbashira, who asked members to recall the principles on which the Women’s Association was founded upon and wished to have the association continue under those guidelines.

    With the Shinbashira as the chief officiant, a heartfelt Oyasama Birth Celebration Service was held at the Main Sanctuary on the 18th of April in celebration of the everliving Oyasama’s 215th birthday. Approximately 67,000 people from around the country as well as 19 different overseas countries returned for the occasion that day.

    After the Service, the “Joyous Chorus”, a singing musical performance to honor Oyasama’s birthday, was held at the Inner Courtyard. The church precincts brimmed with a celebratory atmosphere.

    The Spring Grand Service, led by the Shinbashira, was held on January 26 of the 176th year of the teachings. This day marked the beginning of the three year, one thousand day season leading up to the 130th anniversary of Oyasama. Approximately 75,000 people from across the country and around the world returned to Jiba on this day.
