The Besseki Lectures

The Besseki lectures, delivered at the Home of the Parent, set forth the teachings of God the Parent and are attended for the purpose of receiving the truth of the Sazuke. Anyone who is seventeen or older is eligible to attend these lectures.

To attend the Besseki lecture, people must first take the Besseki Pledge. This is to help them get into an appropriate frame of mind for listening to the lecture. To complete the entire course of the Besseki involves attending nine Besseki lectures, each of which conveys the same truth of the teachings. This is to ensure that the listeners do not miss or misunderstand anything being said.

With each lecture attended, they should reflect on the way they have been living their lives and work to purify and replace the mind based on the truth of the teachings. They should proceed to implement whatever teaching has settled in their minds.

After attending the ninth Besseki lecture, they may receive the truth of the Sazuke, which is nothing short of a supreme gift from God. The truth of the Sazuke is bestowed on their true sincerity characterized by a wish for the salvation of others--sincerity that they have cultivated and nurtured in the course of attending the Besseki lectures.

People who wish to attend the Besseki lectures should first approach the church to which they belong and then, through that church, apply to their directly supervised church, where their application form can be completed. The form should be submitted to the Besseki reception desk, located in East Left Wing 1 of the Oyasato-yakata building-complex.

Those wishing to accompany others in attending the Besseki lectures should complete the Application to Audit the Besseki Lectures and submit it to the Besseki reception desk. The application form is available at followers dormitories.

The Besseki Pledge

We call God the Parent, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto.

God the Parent is God of Origin, God in Truth, who created human beings and the world where there was no form.

God the Parent revealed the divine will to humankind through Oyasama as Shrine. It is due to Oyasama that we learned of the will of God the Parent for the first time.

Oyasama is Miki Nakayama.

God the Parent created human beings to see their Joyous Life and share in it. Thus the Joyous Life is the goal of our existence.

I have come to know of God the Parent through the guidance of ...........* and have learned of the divine will. And because I desire to understand it more clearly and to fix it in my mind, I have returned to Jiba at this time.

We are taught that the Jiba is the place where God the Parent resides and where the Service for universal salvation is performed.

I desire to learn the teachings of God the Parent thoroughly at Jiba, to follow the Divine Model of Oyasama with adoration, and to bring satisfaction to God the Parent and happiness to others.

* Here, people reciting the pledge state the reason they came to know of the teachings. Examples: (1) name of the person who guided them to the teachings or invited them to the Besseki lectures, (2) "my parents' faith," (3) "illness," or (4) "personal problems."

Additional information

As a rule, the Besseki lecture is attended once a month, but those returning from overseas are allowed to complete the nine Besseki lectures during a single visit, provided that there is at least one day of rest between lectures. As for those coming from distant parts of Japan, the number of lectures they may attend in one month varies, depending on the region they come from.

Keeping the Besseki attendance slip safe. What happens if it is lost?

Each time people come for a lecture, they need to show their Besseki attendance slip. Great care should, therefore, be taken not to lose it until the entire course of the Besseki is completed. Some churches and followers dormitories offer to keep their followers' attendance slips. It may be advisable to ask one's church about this service.

It would be a good idea to photocopy the attendance slip each time the Besseki lecture has been attended, just in case. Alternatively, people might copy out the names of the lecturers, the dates, and whether they attended in the morning or afternoon.

In the event of the loss of the attendance slip, it is necessary to start over with the first Besseki lecture unless there is a photocopy of the slip or some such thing to provide details of one's previous lectures.

* No Besseki lecture is given from December 28 through January 1.
