Free and unlimited workings (Juyo)

by Yoshikazu Fukaya

It need hardly be mentioned that there is nothing God the Parent's providence cannot accomplish or grant, as it was responsible for creating human beings and the world, both of which previously did not exist. The physical world, this universe, is the body and bosom of God the Parent. Taking this into consideration, it is not surprising that God the Parent is able to bring about any protection in a single moment and solve any problem whenever it occurs. God the Parent shows us miraculous workings and marvelous providence that transcend both space and time.

This providence of God the Parent is described in the Ofudesaki with the expression "free and unlimited workings" (juyo/juyo jizai). Here are some examples:

Day after day, the mind of God hastens to show you free and unlimited workings quickly.

Ofudesaki III:75

In whatever matters, I shall show you marvels through the free and unlimited workings of God.

Ofudesaki V:79

Tsukihi will enter your bodies and show you free and unlimited workings in all things.

Ofudesaki VII:37

The Chinese characters that are presently applied to the term "juyo," a term unique to Tenrikyo, were first standardized in October 1949 with the publication of The Doctrine of Tenrikyo. While normally read "jiyu" (meaning "freedom" or "liberty"), these same characters are utilized in Tenrikyo to be read as "juyo." This convention was also applied during the revision of the Osashizu that took place before the 80th Anniversary of Oyasama (1966) and that involved adding Chinese characters to the original text.

The expression "free and unlimited" is not only used to describe the providence of God the Parent. When God the Parent's profound protection allows us to freely utilize our body to its full potential and in good health, we are being "provided with the free and unlimited use of the body." Further, we are given the following instruction:

Do not wonder where the truth of free and unlimited workings is. It is in the truth of the heart alone.

Kakisage

Implied in this passage is the sense of God's "free and unlimited workings" that allow everyone in our family to be in good shape, bring harmony to the home, guide things at work to progress smoothly, help nurture good relationships with the people around us, and permit everything to move forward according to our expectations.

Finally, God teaches us, "The mind alone is yours," meaning that there is not a single constraint on us using our mind freely and unlimitedly according to our personal will, so that we are able to think and decide anything. This is taught in the expression "God the Parent has allowed us the free use of the mind."
