In the cause of world
salvation, Tenrikyo commenced an organized effort in the late
1800s to spread the teachings overseas. Tenrikyo established
the Korean Mission Administrative Office in 1909 and the Manchuria
Mission Administrative Office in 1913. The teachings spread also
to Taiwan, Mongolia, Siberia, and China.
Tenrikyo's overseas mission became increasingly active around
the time of the 40th Anniversary of Oyasama, which was observed
in 1926. In order to educate missionaries in the languages and
cultures of regions concerned, Tenrikyo established, among other
institutions, Tenri School of Foreign Languages (forerunner of
Tenri University) in the year before the anniversary, 1925, and
Tenri Sankokan Museum several years later. Further, the Overseas
Mission Department was founded at Church Headquarters in 1927.
The overseas mission made progress in Hawaii, the U.S. mainland,
and Brazil as well. The outbreak of the war, however, rendered
missionary activities extremely difficult. With the end of the
war, some missionaries had no alternative but to return to Japan.
But around the late 1950s, Tenrikyo was able to resume its effort
to spread the teachings overseas and, at present, has mission
headquarters, mission centers, mission posts, churches, and mission
stations in about thirty countries.
